Your vehicle must be in prime condition before you hit the road. Check your vehicle to see if it’s ready for the cross-country road trip.

  • Check the brakes, steering, transmission, tires, engine, fluid levels, other parts of the vehicle that may cause problems while on the road.
  • Don’t forget to bring spare tires, jumper cables, extra wiper fluids, and car tools with you in case of emergency.

 Choose the best route.

There are multiple routes available for cross-country travel in the US. Although, choosing a route doesn’t usually matter that much if your goal is just to get across the country, it can be beneficial if you want to visit your family relatives or friends along the way.

  • The route you choose depends on what you want to do along the way. For example, if you want to see the Rocky Mountains, you can take the northern route.
  • There is also a central route which traverses the Great Plains and the southern route which is perfect for travelers who love the summer weather and want to enjoy the magnificent Grand Canyon in Arizona along the way.

Whichever route you choose it will depend on your preferences. Make a list of the places you want to visit along the way so you can choose the best route.

  1. Bring with you emergency items.

To travel safely across the US needs serious preparation which includes bringing with you important emergency items such as charged mobile phones, first aid kit, flashlights, extra batteries, spare tires, tire gauge, car tools, emergency roadside kit, etc.

  • Anything can happen on the road. To compensate for this, you must be prepared for anything that can happen on the road.
  • Vehicle breakdowns, for example, can happen to you in the middle of nowhere where there is no cellphone reception to call a tow truck service. You don’t really need to call somebody to get your vehicle fixed because if you bring with you your emergency roadside kit, you should be able to fix your vehicle on your own.
  1. Avoid distracted driving.

One of the major causes of road accidents is distracted driving. Since you’re traveling with your kids or friends, it’s easy to get distracted by them.

Here are some tips to avoid distracted driving when traveling across the country.

  • Avoid eating snacks or meals while driving. If you’re hungry, it won’t hurt you to do a quick stopover at a diner or pull the car over to the side of the road to eat your snack. Eating while driving is difficult to do and can sometimes become messy.
  • Secure the needs of your children before you hit the road. If your kids need something, pull off the road to attend to their needs safely. Reaching into the backseat while driving is not ideal as you can lose control of your vehicle and crash.
  • If you have other passengers, try asking for their help so you can focus on driving.
  • If there’s a situation that needs your attention, pull off the road safely to address the situation. Don’t attempt to see a situation while you’re driving as it may cause you to lose your focus on the road.
  1. Get plenty of rest throughout the trip.

Driving can wear you out, so getting plenty of rest throughout the trip is essential. Fatigue or drowsy driving is one of the major causes of accidents on the road.

  • Remind yourself not to drive for more than 8 hours a day when traveling across the US. Make sure that you pull off the road at least every hour and give yourself a 10-15 minute break to stretch your legs, or drink a cup of coffee as it can help re-focused your mind and alertness again.
  • Be aware of signs of fatigue such as yawning, slower reaction times, heavy eyes, daydreaming, stiffness, impatience, and loss of motivation. If you notice that you’re exhibiting one or all of these signs, pull off the road to give yourself a break from driving.

Lastly, enjoy the rest of the trip. Cross-country road trip across the USA can lead you to all sorts of beautiful places and sights to visit. Whether it’s the northern route, central route, or the southern route, you’re sure to see plenty of interesting places along the way.
