Sunshine Reveals Most Likely Tourist Destinations to Get Murdered as a British Person

Over the past few years, there has been an increasing number of terror attacks the world over. As a result, the number of British people who have been murdered abroad has also soared. Online travel agency from the United Kingdom, Sunshine.co.uk, has completed a study into the number of British nationals who have been killed while visiting overseas destinations, revealing that the total since 2012 stands at 250.

The statistics are grim, as they demonstrate a 60% increase in the number of people who are killed. Some of the results from the study demonstrated that:

  1. Pakistan was the deadliest place to go, with 37 people being killed between 2012 and 2016.
  2. Tunisia was the second deadliest destination, with 34 people being killed. All 34 of these were victims of the Sousse massacre, the Islamic State coordinated attack at the beach. The Sousse massacre is still fresh on many people’s mind. It happened in June 2015, when gunmen entered the beach and randomly killed people on the beach and within the hotel complex itself.
  3. Jamaica came in third place, where 18 people had died.
  4. The USA was in fourth place, with 15 deaths.
  5. France came in fifth with 14 deaths, one of whom was Nick Alexander. He was slaughtered at the Bataclan nightclub in Paris, which was attacked by Islamic State terrorists on the 13th of November 2015. Nick Alexander sold Eagles of Death Metal, the band that played there that night, merchandise. Some 130 people died there in total on that night, and the attackers, who targeted the Stade de France, restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, all committed suicide.
  6. South Africa came in sixth place, with 11 deaths.
  7. Ukraine, Australia, and Algeria shared seventh place, with 10 deaths each.
  8. Afghanistan came in eight place with six deaths, a position shared with both Spain and Barbados. The latter is a particularly popular tourist destination.
  9. Ninth place was shared by Egypt and Brazil, with five British people dying.
  10. Bangladesh came 10th, where four British people were killed.

This particular piece of the Sunshine study focused specifically on deaths from terror attacks, however. With the results being so interesting, the company decided to look further into the specific details on where British holiday makers were most likely to die. This revealed a number of other very interesting figures, including:

The countries where British people were most likely to die while taking a selfie were:

  1. India (19 deaths).
  2. Russia (7 deaths).
  3. United States (5 deaths).
  4. Spain and Philippines (4 deaths each).
  5. Portugal and Indonesia (2 deaths each).
  6. South Africa, Romania, Pakistan, Mexico, Italy, and China (1 death each).

These deaths were caused by falls, trains, gunshots, grenades, plain crashes, car crashes, and animals.

The research also showed that, in total, over 4,000 British people die while on holiday each year. The most likely places for a British person to die, according to the Sunshine research, were:

  1. Spain (721 deaths).
  2. Thailand (348 deaths).
  3. Switzerland (191 deaths).
  4. Cyprus and France (162 deaths each).
  5. Greece (152 deaths).
  6. United States (139 deaths).
  7. UAE (98 deaths).
  8. Portugal (82 deaths).
  9. India and Germany (79 deaths each).
  10. Turkey (73 deaths).
  11. Philippines (67 deaths).
  12. Australia (66 deaths).
  13. Italy (65 deaths).

A representative from Sunshine says: “The majority of the 4,000 or so deaths each year are caused by accidents. One of the big problems with this is the cost repatriation, which can reach in the thousands.”
