My brother was put in charge of looking around for somewhere different for their annual sales meeting so he asked me for advice. He wanted to find a place that would have all the technology necessary for a business meeting and yet have some relax time after business hours with his colleagues. It was to be for 3 days during the week and preferably somewhere hot while the rest of the country is suffering with the cold.
Well, I suggested the Canary Islands as they are close by and decided to help him and get all the information he needed on the different options. Specifically, I thought he should look at 5 star hotels in Gran Canaria.
A Spanish archipelago just off the coast of Africa made up of 13 islands which include Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Palma and Gran Canaria. The islands’ beaches and unusual environment attract tourists from all over the world. The climate is subtropical so the summers are warm and the winters are mildly warm.
Well, I picked this island for my brother to book his company meetings there as I think it is one of the most diverse islands, with its microclimates ranging from warm in the south with lots of sun and people to cool in the north, with its mountains and lots of rain and less inhabitants. It was the first island to have roads going all the way around the island and has the busiest airport which is responsible for the air traffic for all the islands.
Gran Canaria is a very interesting place to visit. Here are a few bits of interesting information about the island and places to discover:
• Around 40% of the island is protected natural areas like the Dunes of Maspalomas and the national parks.
• The capital is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria which has a protected beach and diving area at Canteras Beach.
• The city of Las Palmas is famous for its annual Carnival.
• It was the first stop of Christopher Columbus on the way back from his expedition to the new world.
• It has an Archaeological museum.
• The Shrine of Virgen del Pino can be found on the island.
• The Guayadeque Ravine on the eastern part of the island boasts of preserved cave dwellings which has a church and cave restaurants built into the hillside.
• The Neogothic temple Arucas Cathedral is worth discovering in Arucas.
• There are banana plantations in Galdar.
• In Gran Canaria, you can find ancient tombs and archaeological remains.
• Arguineguin is a fishing city.
• Various rock formations of interest to tourists include the highest peak called Pico de las Nieves.
• The various monasteries, churches and chapels have beautiful architecture and treasures.
• You have a myriad of choices of 5 star hotels in Gran Canaria.
Something for everyone, it looks like. There’s a bit of sport, a bit of culture and a bit of history. The island has lots of fiestas, sporting events and concerts and of course, there is the possibility of doing nothing but unwinding by the beach or pool.

So what can this great island offer me in terms of business? Well, for starters the weather is perfect all year round. So, any day on the calendar is open for possibilities. Obviously, on school holidays, there would tend to be more people around, so to avoid the throng of tourists, pick a less busy time if you can.
The island is geared towards business incentive trips with great settings for meetings and enjoyment afterwards in one of the many famous restaurants, event venues, spas, resorts, and many more options. It is a great place for water sports and there are golf courses, hiking and adventure activities that could be organised for the group experience or team-building strategies.
My brother gave me a list of things to look for in the hotels in Gran Canaria for his business trip. He said that they were looking for comfort for the attendees, good service from the hotel, a range of activities available close to the hotel if they so like, a good restaurant in the hotel, a range of hotel amenities from spas to gyms to pools. Another important aspect was the technology that was available to the group and the services or care taken to provide everything they needed to conduct the meeting successfully.
Well, the list from my brother seems like a tall order but in doing a bit of research, I was pleased to find that there are 5 star hotels in Gran Canaria with the specs that he asked for. The most important thing for my brother though in reality, is to have access to water sports as he is an avid water sports enthusiast.
