10 Month Travel Update – 10 Largest/Longest/Deepest… in the world adventures!

After 10 months of traveling Vicky and I have seen quite a lot, probably doubling what we’ve seen in our entire lives before the trip. Sometimes the records can be a little trivial, in that if you get specific enough just about anything can hold a world record – still, it’s fun to keep track of all the biggest/largest/longest/oldest things we’ve seen/done so far. Here’s 10 for 10 months on the road!

Record #1: Largest wooden building in the world

Where: Nara, Japan

One of our first world record adventures was to see this massively large wooden temple in Nara, Japan.

Record #2: Largest bronze statue of the Buddha in the world

Where: Todaiji temple, Japan

Buddha at Todaiji Temple Nara Japan

Who knew it was a two for one deal? Inside the largest wooden building in the world is the largest bronze statue of Buddha! Guess it makes sense since they needed a large building to have room for it huh?

Record #3: Largest wooden Buddha in the world

Where: Beijing, China

Lama Temple Buddha

Combine the first two and you have the largest wooden Buddha in the Lama temple in downtown Beijing!

Record #4: Largest palace by area enclosed within the palace’s fortified walls

Where: Beijing, China

Forbidden City

Kind of a mouthful but it’s a controversial record so you have to be clear – The Forbidden City in Beijing.

Record #5: Longest wall in the world

Where: Beijing, China

Great Wall

Ok this one is an easy one – The Great Wall of China, of course.

Record #6: Longest passenger cableway of high mountains in the world

Where: Tianmenshan, China

Cable Car up to Tianmenshan

Big mountains require big cableways – this one took us about 45 minutes just to ride it up!

Record #7: Deepest river canyon in the world

Where: Tiger leaping gorge, China

This is also one of the best hikes in the world, but that’s a bit more subjective.

Record #8: Oldest salt mine in the world

Where: Hallstadt, Austria

This was pretty neat as we got to put on minor suits and travel underground to explore.

Record #9: Largest ice caves in the world

Where: Salzburg, Austria

It’s actually not THAT cold in there, just around freezing.

Record #10: Longest continuous rack railway in the world

Where:  Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Had no idea what a rack railway was until I was on one – cool that my first time was on the world’s longest!
