Travelling and exploring the world together sounds like the plot to a gorgeously romantic Hollywood movie, doesn’t it? Walks along sandy beaches as you watch the sun set on a beautiful tropical island…think of all those incredible Instagram moments! But, did you know that couples who decide to travel together more often than not really put their relationship to the test and to its limits. Think about it, you’re in a foreign country, no one speaks English, one of you has lost their passport, or all the money has gone, you can’t find your way back to your hotel and it’s getting dark…one of you wants to climb a famous mountain and the other hates heights…travelling together can be a rocky road even for the most steadfast of couples.
So, we’ve come up with 5 tips you can use to travel successfully as a couple. Enjoy!
Be prepared
Travelling means that you need to be prepared for whatever the world can throw at you. So you’re going to need a good travel insurance policy. Check out UHC Safe Trip for the latest information and details. Even if one of you thinks it’s an unnecessary expense, you really shouldn’t travel without it. Get your adventures off to the best start and get yourselves covered!
Set a budget
Most couples argue about their finances. And just because you’re thousands of miles away on a different continent doesn’t mean that changes…Travelling is expensive, so if there’s any specific activities either of you want to do, it’s best to book it now before you travel and pay for it in advance, as well as things like hotel rooms, flights and other ways you might be travelling. Then, set aside money for drinks, meals out, day trips and other ways to treat yourselves.
Beware of getting hangry
We’ve all been there. Snapped at our S.O because we haven’t eaten and we’re cranky. This can happen a lot on the road, especially if you’re travelling to and from places a lot. Make sure you plan ahead and always have snacks and bottled water on you. If you’re passing a local market, stop and try a few bits and pieces. Never let skipping a meal spark a huge argument. It’s not worth it.
Take a tripod for couple photos
It’s no good if you invest all this time and money into travelling together and you don’t get any nice couple shots. Avoid any arguments about who’s hogging the camera and take a mini tripod with you on those specific days when you’re heading to a gorgeous viewpoint.
Spend time apart
Living in each other’s pockets for days on end isn’t healthy and sooner or later one of you will snap at the other. That’s why it’s important to take time out from each other whilst you’re travelling. You could have a nap in the hotel room while your partner visits a place of interest for the afternoon. Who knows, they might come across the perfect place to have dinner later on the way back!
