Pyramids and The Sphinx
It is hard to imagine someone visiting Cairo for the first time and not going to see the Great Pyramid of Giza and The Sphinx. There are thousands of tourists visiting the plateau with the three pyramids every day but the place is so magical that you will probably forget about everyone around you. The Sphinx is located nearby and even though it’s missing its nose the monument is spectacular.
Cairo Tower
Every great city has one place where you can climb and admire the majestic view from the top. In Cairo this is Cairo Tower. It is 187 meters tall and marks the highest point in the capital. Its design resembles a lotus flower and if you are into conspiracy theories take some time to read about the building of the tower in the 1960s and where did the money came from according to the Egyptian president.
The Citadel
The Saladin Citadel of Cairo is an Islamic fortification build during the 12th century to protect Cairo and Fustat from the Crusaders. The structure is very impressive and is a great set for your holiday pictures. Visitors can climb at the top for a better view of Cairo. In clear days you can even see The Pyramids.
Khan el-Khalili
If you want to feel the real spirit of a city you should visit the main market. Khan el-Khalili will take you back hundreds of years ago in Ancient Cairo where you can buy spices, perfumes, textiles or fruits. The souq is operating since the 14th century. Don’t forget to haggle if you decide to buy something.
Heliopolis
Cairo with its nine million inhabitants and all the tourists can be really tiring. So if you need to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the Egyptian capital, go to the Heliopolis park. It is a great garden in the suburbs where you can enjoy a walk around the historic sites because Heliopolis was one of the oldest cities in Ancient Egypt.
Nile
The longest river in the world cannot be missed while in Cairo. It is one of the secrets behind the Egyptian civilization. The Nile is beautiful and fascinating. Enjoy the boardwalk or better still take one of the many boat cruises. If you decide to have your dinner at one of the boats and watch the sunset this will be a hard to forget memory from the Egyptian capital.
The Egyptian Museum
If you have the time to visit only one museum in Egypt, choose this one. There you will see a great variety of treasures and exhibits. And don’t forget the Mummy Room.
