Everybody needs a vacation now and then. Choosing the right destination for a holiday or a vacation is one of the most difficult things to decide. The destination should be apt for those going there. For a couple on honeymoon, Paris would be a dream come true. For those who love the beaches, Hawaii would fit the charts the best. There are a few places that have something to offer for every kind of vacationer. Sydney is one of the few that fits that bill.
About the city
Known as the Harbour city, Sydney is the oldest and largest city in Australia. It is a bustling cosmopolitan that was named after Thomas Townshend, 1stViscount Sydney who was the British home secretary then. It was founded on the 26th of January as a British Penal colony. Till this day, the day is celebrated as Australia day and is a national public holiday.
Getting to Sydney
The main gateway to Australia is the Sydney Kingsford Smith International Airport which also happens to be the busiest one in the country. The airport has the reputation of being the oldest continually operated commercial airport in the world. If you fly into other airports you can reach Sydney from the regional airports present in those cities.
You need to be aware that there are no flights operating between 11:00 in the night and 5:30 in the morning. After the terminal closes down, you cannot stay in the domestic one but a small waiting facility is available in the international terminal.
If you are travelling by sea, you could dock at the International Passenger terminal at Circular Quay or at Barangaroo Wharf 5 which is at Darling Harbour.
The Weather
The city is mostly sunny throughout the year. With summers being extremely hot and winters being cool and not cold, you wouldn’t need much warm clothes. Light clothing should do. Most public buildings are air conditioned and a few of the vehicles of public transport are too.
Stay and food
Sydney offers different kinds of places to stay. There are hotels, hostels for backpackers, cabins, cottages, resorts, farm stays, bed and breakfasts, and self-contained service apartments. There are many websites offering great discounts on hotel bookings in Sydney, and we were surprised by how easy it is to book directly through Accor (see here for Accor’s Sydney hotels offers); you can really save a hell lot of money by booking your hotel directly.
Food is available in different varieties. There are full course continental and English breakfasts available. There is a food street that treats people to a variety of goodies and delicacies. One wishes they had more space in their stomach and digestive power.
Places to see and enjoy
There are different kinds of places to sightsee in Sydney. Topping the list is the Sydney harbour which is known for its splendid natural beauty. The Sydney Opera house and the Sydney harbour bridge are located in this region, each of them warranting a visit. People who are adventurous can go bridge climbing with protective clothing and lifeline attached to the bridge.
For those fond of history, the small fort located at Bradleys head, the middle head fortifications, the lower Georges high commanding position and the Georges head battery are the four forts that form a part of the Sydney harbours defence system. There are wonderful museums like the Power house museum, the Australian National Maritime museum, the Museum of Sydney and the Australian museum which have wonderful exhibits that highlight history, science and technology, and other fields.
To go for a holiday in Sydney would ensure that you have a wonderful trip and a holiday as the city offers a pleasant stay for all.
