Before traveling to South America I had no idea about the Bolivian Salt Flats. I didn’t know much about South American destinations and highlights in general, but once we got on the backpacker trail in Peru, everyone was talking out the Bolivian Salt Flats, so I knew I had to put them on our itinerary as well. And according to JustFly this is one of the must see sites in all of South America.
The only way to see the salt flats is through a guided Jeep tour and you can pick a 2 day, 3 day, 4 day etc itinerary. The 3 day seems the most popular so that’s the one we went for. After trying to negotiate rates with different companies we settled on Cordillera traveler along with a Ukrainian friend we met on our trip and one of her friends. Our group of 4 was ready for our 3 day Jeep adventure in the Bolivian salt flats.
We had done some reading and knew we were going drive up to super high altitudes – 5000 meters, where it would be freezing cold in the mornings/nights and that we would need to bring all our water and snacks with us.
I was ready. Hey a salt fanatic like me can’t think of a more magical destination that literally miles and miles of fields full of salt.
And so we piled into the Jeep, meeting Polly our surly Bolivian driver (who spoke no English) and our 2 other tour-mates a young Dutch couple. They seemed friendly – I had a feeling we’d all be besties by the end of our days together.
As we set off the landscape immediately turned dramatic.
And so it continued all three days.
You do spend long days in the car but we passed the time getting to know eachother and trying to get Polly to loosen up a bit and start to like us.
Throughout the days we would make many different spots to all sorts of sites. My favorite part of course is where you get to take all sorts of perspective photos where you get to goof off since the salt fields allow you to place objects at varying distances and manipulate the size and proportions of everything.
This is pretty much what I live for.
The whole tour is amazingly beautiful.
And I literally could not get enough.
We also lucked out with our group who got along marvelously and spent the evenings drinking wine and playing card games, story games, etc.
It was nothing short of a blast. The JustFly review did not lie – this truly is the experience of a lifetime.
