Gun Lovers Tips for Safe, Summer Fun
Added by Vicky on January 19, 2014
Summer is officially upon us and with it comes along those good ol’ summer activities- camping, vacationing to the nearest beach….and we certainly can’t forget BBQs! However, there are those adventurists out there who prefer a different kind of activity while passing these summer months. What activity might that be, do you ask? Well dust off those shooting gloves (or head to your nearest store and buy some) and let’s find out!
A whopping 48 percent of Americans (totaling an impressive 98 million) enjoy some level of shooting sports or hunting (or both). With that little tidbit being said, let’s go into a few tips and tricks for those firearm lovers out there- always remember, SAFETY FIRST!
A Few Helpful Hints
- First and foremost, we must all remember to treat ALL guns as if they are loaded. This is an obvious no-brainer to some, but it certainly does not hurt to point that out for the first tip. Keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and making sure that you are keeping your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot is one of the first rules when using firearms. REMEMBER THEM!
- Determine your eye dominance; most beginner shooters make the incorrect assumption that if they are right-handed they are automatically right-eye dominant (or vice versa). This is not necessarily true; those who are same-side dominant (right eye and right hand, left eye and left hand) typically have an easier time shooting and adjusting their sight than those who are not same-side dominant.
- Speaking of sight dominance, there are some options out there that can improve your shooting accuracy (which also may depend on the type of gun that you are shooting). An example of one of these options would be something like a rifle scope (for those who prefer to shoot something a little more exciting). Naturally, this isn’t something that beginners should be worried about, but for those who are in experienced in shooting for sports may want to look at expanding their accessories by checking out the latest scopes for rifles. Whether you are taking a look at scopes for target shooting or hunting, there can be a plethora of options out there for you. Familiarizing yourself with various scopes, as well as their manufacturers, is an important step when searching for the perfect scope. Make sure you take the time you need, and remember that expensive doesn’t automatically mean the best!
- Be safe, but have fun! Shooting for sport can be a very enjoyable activity, but of course you have to remember caution and safety before anything else. Always be aware of your surroundings while shooting-the worse way to ruin summer fun is for someone to get hurt.
The summer can be filled with whatever activities you would like-however, no matter what the activity, the two things to keep in mind are safety and to have fun! Sports shooting is a highly enjoyable activity, but only if you keep in mind the tips above.
If you are a beginner shooter, research the nearest gun range for information on their lessons; and if you’re an expert shooter it never hurts to refresh your memory on the tips above.
Happy Summer!
