An Off-Season Visit to Rome is best

Rome is a fantastic city to visit at any time of the Year. Most people end up going in the summer and though this can be the most magical time as all the architecture looks that much more glorious when it’s bathed in sunlight, you also have to accept the fact that Rome will be packed full of other tourists just like you.

It really depends on how tolerant you are of queuing and seeing amazing sights surrounded by other people and their elbows as they jostle to take a photo of things like The Colosseum, the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Then of course, there’s St Peter’s Square and the Basilica as well as the Vatican Museums. All of these sights are must-see items for anyone on a first trip to Rome.

If you have flexibility about when you travel, then Rome is one city that is really best seen off-season. Sure, you may not be able to sit and have an ice-cream on the Spanish steps, but come to think of it, you probably wouldn’t be able to sit down anywhere outside in Rome during the summer anyway.

Look at the different ways to pay for different museums and getting around Rome. There are different options including a Rome pass that gives you both public transport travel and access to a number of different sites. Or there’s the carta archeologia which is a seven day pass to a number of major museums including the Colosseum, the Baths of Caracalla and Diocletian, the Palazzo Massimo and Palazzo Altemps. It really depends how much time you have in the eternal city and how much you enjoy going round museums as to which card will be best for you. Don’t worry too much about the public transport pass though – if you’re fit and able, Rome is an easy city to walk around for the main part.
