Piazza del Duomo

Piazza del Duomo is located right at the city’s historical center. It features three of the main monuments in Florence: the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, the Battistero di San Giovanni and the Campanile de Giotto, all built with white and green marble

 

The Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore features an impressing dome built by Brunelleschi, whose stunning silhouette can be appreciated above Florence’s buildings. Inside the cathedral you will be able to enjoy multiple religious works of art, and if you go to the top of the dome, you will be able to enjoy some breathtaking views of Florence.

 

The Battistero di San Giovanni is the oldest building in Piazza del Duomo. Inside it you will be able to enjoy the views of marvelous mosaics pieces, but what really catches the visitors’ attention is this building door. Known as the Door to Paradise by Ghiberti, it pictures scenes from the Old Testament in 10 bronze panels. 

 

The Campanile de Giotto is the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore’s belltower. It is one of the best lookouts in the city and it has beautiful decorations.  

 

Piazza della Signoria and the Palazzo Vecchio

Along with Piazza del Duomo, Piazza della Signoria is one of the most popular squares in Florence. It is full of monuments, being the most important ones Palazzo Vecchio (with its impressive Salone dei Cinquecento), the Loggia dei Lanzi (with an impressive representation of Perseus holding Medusa’s head),  the marble statues of Hercules, Caco and Michelangelo’s David, and the Neptune Fountain. 

Galleria degli Uffizi

Galleria degli Uffizi was originally designed as a Medici palace. At present it has become one of the most important museums in the world. Its collection features artworks from Leonardo da Vinci and popular italian artists, such as Raphael or Tiziano. This makes Galleria degli Uffizi a place you can not miss if you love art or if you are looking to immerse yourself into Italy’s history.
