Top 8 Backpacking Destinations for 2013

When it comes to seeing the world, there is no better option than backpacking. Allowing you to truly get immersed into a culture without the constraints of luxury hotels, as well as being an affordable choice for many, it’s the sort of experience that can change your life.

Of course though, there are many options when it comes to destinations. Here, we take a look at some of the top choices for 2013.

Ukraine

Ukraine is the largest country in Europe, and offers plenty in the way of both culture and fun. It provides a great introduction to Russia, and whether you fancy exploring the mountains or sampling the local vodka, you’ll find that there’s always something to keep you entertained.

Turkey

A fascinating country where east meets west, Turkey can keep backpackers happy for months on end. Though Istanbul is the natural starting point, don’t forget that the rest of the country has plenty to offer. The south-western coast is known for its sundrenched beaches, and getting out to see the unspoiled villages is a must.

England

England might not appear near the top of your list when it comes to backpacking destinations, but it’s worth some serious consideration. You’ll find rolling countryside, beautiful coastlines, and vibrant cities to explore. The relatively cool summers can also be welcoming if you’re used to facing the scorching temperatures of farther flung climes.

Myanmar

Myanmar is Thailand’s often forgotten neighbour, but is a great backpacking destination. With beaches, jungles, unrivalled diving opportunities, and much more, it’s becoming almost as popular as other islands in the area. Get there in 2013 before it gets too overcrowded!

Cuba

Cuba is like nowhere else in the world. From the 1950s-era cars rolling down the streets, to the amazing Havana club nights, it guarantees an experience that you’ll never forget. Cuba holidays are fun, but backpacking lets you really soak up all that the place has to offer.

Australia

Australia has been a favourite with backpackers for many years, and for good reason. As it’s English speaking, there are relatively less cultural and communication barriers to deal with, and it can be easy to find work. It’s very possible to spend a month or so in one area and fund further travels with bar work.

Berlin

As one of the cheapest cities in the Western world, Berlin is great for backpackers. You can expect to find dorm rooms for as little as 10 Euros, and the excellent beers are just small change. The public transport is also cheap and very efficient.

Spain

The train network in Spain makes it easy to get from one place to another, so exploring the whole country is an achievable feat for backpackers. The food in Spain is fabulous, so be sure to sample the local delights. Tapas bars are plentiful, and the sangria often goes down a little too well!
