When you are planning your holiday to Greece the first thing you’ll want to think about is what time of the year to go. Price and weather will fluctuate depending on the season, so it’s best to decide your budget and what you plan to do before you decide. If you are planning to hit the beach of course you’ll want warm weather and calm seas but you just when is the best time to go? Here are a few things that might help you with your choice.
July and August
This is peak season in Greece where beaches are full of both tourists and locals alike. Prices are at their highest and so are the temperatures. At this time of the year though, you are guaranteed hot sunny days and warm seas. This is why Greece is such a popular summer holiday destination. Perfect for enjoying your time on the beach. The best beaches to visit during these months are Plaka beach in Naxos, Faraga Beach in Paros and Platys Gialos in Mykonos. However, any beach in Greece at this time of the year will feel like the perfect place to be in the world.
June and September
During these months, you’ll still be able to enjoy the warm weather but without the crowds and scorching heat of July and August. The water temperature is still quite warm too so swimming in the sea can still be enjoyed by families. Prices tend to be a little lower than the peak season too, so you get a bit more for your money and good weather too. For amazing beaches in June and September try St Pauls Bay in Rhodes, Matala Beach in Crete and Ornos beach in Mykonos.
May and October
You might still have good weather and you definitely won’t have to share the beaches with as many tourists during these months. Warm and relaxed, you might not have the high temperatures of the peak season but you will have some lovely pleasant beach weather none the less. Seas tend to be a bit cooler and not so ideal for swimming during this part of the year but of course that doesn’t stop some hardy beachgoers. You can find some great deals throughout all of Greece in May and October and if you are lucky to get good weather it will be a steal. If you want a different type of beach experience, then why not try the Red Beach and Perissa beaches in Santorini.
November through to April
This is by far the cheapest time of the year to visit Greek beaches. The weather is cooler and some restaurants and hotels on the islands close for business. You are more likely to see grey skies and pouring rain, compared to the postcard perfect blue skies and turquoise waters of the summer.
However, if you want to do some sightseeing this is the perfect time of the year. Lower temperatures and less visitors mean you will be more comfortable touring famous sights and you’ll get to see a lot more too. If you are visiting Athens during these months and want to visit the beach, then you should head to Vouliagmeni Beach which is the nearest beach to the city.
So when do you think is best?
It might be hard to choose when to go and once you have done that, then you’ve got to choose where. There are so many amazing beaches in Greece it is almost impossible to pick where to go first. But wherever you go, you are sure to have an amazing time on a beach holiday in Greece.
